50th Anniversary Notable Alumni Feature Chris Sutterfield, M.D.: Tulsa Junior College, now Tulsa Community College, was pivotal in helping Chris acclimate to a college schedule in an environment conducive to academic achievement. “My study habits were enhanced tremendously through interaction with my fellow students, most of whom were older and had returned to school in pursuit of a career change towards healthcare,” he said.
After studying pre-med from 1985 to 1987 at TJC, Chris completed a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Zoology and a medical degree and residency in general surgery. During his training, he earned multiple honors including being named Outstanding Surgery Resident two years in a row. In addition, he received the Saint Francis Hospital Trauma Institute's C.T. Thompson Award for Excellence in Trauma Care in 2002. He has also been named one of the Best Doctors in America since 2009.
A Tulsa native, Chris has practiced medicine for 20 years and is currently a partner at Surgical Associates, Inc., as well as a shareholder and previous board member at Oklahoma Surgical Hospital. In addition, he is an owner and active participant in a small real estate investment business.
Chris says the driving force in his life is his faith in Christ. He is an active supporter of EduRec, a youth and family fun center in North Tulsa, and One Hope Ministry, which provides support in multiple areas to underprivileged children. A long-time member at Asbury United Methodist Church, Chris has served as a small group leader for the past four years with the same group of boys who are now sophomores. When asked, he states his most notable accomplishment is being a husband to his wife Melissa and father to his five children.
