Fundraiser Event Set to Endow Beth McGraw Hixon Scholarship

Does a week for four in a beachfront condo in Kauai sound nice? Or how about two courtside tickets to the upcoming Thunder game in Tulsa? Maybe a piece of art or jewelry is more your style. Regardless of your taste or budget, you have an opportunity to bid on auction items at various price points, enjoy food and friends, and raise money for a scholarship honoring the late Beth McGraw Hixon, former Professor of Chemistry at TCC. The Beth McGraw Hixon Scholarship Fundraiser is 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 in the Center for Creativity on the TCC Metro Campus.
Each $20 ticket entitles a participant to food by Teri Fermo, drinks, and a chance to win a variety of raffle items. Funds raised will go toward endowing a scholarship for a TCC graduating student majoring in chemistry and transferring to a four-year university.
Other auction items include:
- University of Oklahoma football signed by three Heisman Trophy winners
- Oklahoma State University football (signed)
- Original artwork
- Gift certificates
- Skin care products
- Portable gas picnic grill
This scholarship carries forward the ideas and values that Hixon held during her 42 years at TCC. She had a positive influence on her colleagues and oftentimes went beyond the classroom to engage students.
“Beth was the primary faculty role model to many of us,” said Audrey Alcorn, Professor of Sociology. “She felt like anyone who was just teaching classes wasn’t fully doing their job. She was the consummate professional who believed that teaching at TJC/TCC had to involve a commitment to making the whole college operate on principles of collegiality, fairness and ‘doing the right thing.’ I can’t fully express what a gem Beth was.”
