TCC Hosts Critical Conversations on Equity and Education with National Speakers

For the second year, Tulsa Community College will host an important dialogue about equity, education and student success with nationally recognized speakers.

The second annual Institute for Culturally Responsive Pedagogy is set for Friday, Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s virtual seminar provides a great opportunity for teachers interested in creating an engaging and accessible learning environment for culturally diverse students.

“Attendees will learn how to develop strategies to better engage diverse students and hear from renowned national scholars who are a part of the critical conversation about equity in student success that is occurring across the country,” said Eunice Tarver, TCC Assistant VP for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Northeast Campus Provost.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Derald Wing Sue, who serves as a professor of psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. With more than 170 publications and 23 books under his belt, including four best-selling texts, Dr. Sue is the most cited and influential multicultural scholar today. He is a pioneer in the field of multicultural psychology, microaggression theory, racial dialogues, multicultural counseling and therapy, and the psychology of racism/antiracism.

Dr. Lisa Delpit, Eminent Scholar and Executive Director of the Center for Urban Educational Excellence at Florida International University, will also be a featured speaker. An award-winning, best-selling author, she is best known for her publications Other People's Children: Cultural Conflict in the Classroom (1995) and Teaching When the World is on Fire (2019).

“In addition, participants will have courageous conversations with K-12 and postsecondary peers across the state about how to create inclusive, supportive, engaging and affirming environments that prepare first-generation, low-income and students of color for equitable educational access and success,” said Tarver.
