TCC Nearly Doubles Minority Enrollment in 10 Years

Tulsa Community College has nearly doubled the number of minority students enrolled in the past 10 years with one in three TCC students identifying themselves as a minority. TCC had 28,545 students enrolled during the 2012-2013 academic year of which 10,049 students were minority or 35.2 percent of the student population.

TCC takes its mission to increase access to higher education seriously and has developed a number of outreach programs to reach historically underserved and underrepresented communities. TCC holds three annual events that have been instrumental in helping the College achieve greater student diversity: Day of Vision (fall), TCC/NAACP Youth Helping Youth Seminar (spring), and Hispanic Student Luncheon and Career/College Fair (spring).

By the numbers, TCC has seen an increase in the number of minority students enrolled in college.

• 21 percent minority enrollment
• 14.2 percent minority enrollment

Day of Vision is the most popular TCC workshop of the year for students who plan to go to college. It is an award-winning college preparation program that has been nationally recognized for its effectiveness in motivating students to attend college. The free event sees nearly 1,000 participants each year and is marking its 24th year on Saturday, Nov. 2. Day of Vision is designed to familiarize students with college life; explore funding opportunities through financial aid and scholarship applications; introduce skills for succeeding in college and explore college majors and careers.

Break-out sessions are designed for students and parents. Students will pick from more than 15 workshop topics ranging from career options, test taking strategies, tips on writing scholarship essays to college readiness and college survival. Parents will take part in break-out sessions with topics such as paying for college, college preparedness and Tulsa Achieves.

Day of Vision is Saturday, Nov. 2 at TCC’s Northeast Campus, 3727 East Apache. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the event runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with lunch provided. For more information or to make your reservation, call Paulette Elias at (918) 595-7838.
