Garrett Fuentez uses material, thread and a little imagination to create an entire world for the stage at Tulsa Community College. He is a TCC student majoring in theatre and puts the finishing touches on Aladdin’s vest, paying attention to the intricate details, as part of a summer Costume Techniques class.

Fuentez, along with fellow students, Cody O’Steen, Robert Shook, Micah Timmons and Hannah Henderson, are showcasing their talents in costuming, choreography and prop building for Tulsa Children’s Summer Theatre production of Disney’s “Aladdin, Jr.” The summer production has a cast of more than 40 children, between the ages of 6 and 16, which means a great deal of work behind the scenes.

“While many elementary and middle schools still offer music programs, we don’t see as many theatre programs during those grade levels and this summer program helps fill the gap,” said TCC Theatre Coordinator and Tulsa Children’s Summer Theatre coordinator Mark Frank. “The program opens the door for many kids who may not otherwise be introduced to theatre as well as provides opportunities for TCC students to help with the production through hands-on learning projects and class curriculum.”

Disney’s “Aladdin, Jr.” has all of the favorite characters from the hit Disney film including Aladdin, Jasmine, Iago, Jafar, the Genie, and is a musical adventure filled with magic, mayhem, and flying carpet rides. Plus, the show features the award-winning score, with songs by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, including "A Whole New World" and "Friend Like Me."

Performances are 7 p.m., July 29, July 30, July 31 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on August 1 and August 2 at the TCC Southeast Campus VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education Studio Theatre. The theatre is located at 10300 E. 81st Street.
